Tongvaidu is one of the oldest deities in Almira. Born from a coyote and an eagle, Tongvaidu appears as a huge coyote. His pupils are replaced with small moons, which accurately represent the moon above. He also sports eagles wings and the beak of an eagle, from which fangs grow. From his coat hangs magical runes. Tongvaidu is a trickster who is known for bringing gifts to humanity, including the gift of language. Tongvaidu is often at odds with Adrigor, his opposite aspect, disagreeing over whether or not nature should help the growth of civilization.
Tongvaidu’s First Gift
In ancient times, shortly after Yatsuo painted the world, Tongvaidu was birthed from the union of coyote and an eagle. He burst forth laughing from the womb, and his mother ran in fright, for he was born a coyote with a set of eagle’s wings and a fanged eagle’s beak. In his eyes reflected the moon and in his fur was twined the runes which birthed the first languages.
As his mother fled, he looked to his left and his right. To his left he saw a snake eating its own tail, and to his right he saw a hag hopping up and down on her left foot. And as he pondered these signs, he went forward, for moving forward (he decided) was better than moving back.
And as Tongvaidu moved forward, he looked to his left and to his right. To his left he saw a stone shaped as a horned moon, and to his right he saw a frog with three heads, eating from a tree of sweet berries. And as he pondered these signs, he went forward, for moving forward (he decided) was better than moving back.
And then Tongvaidu tired of moving, and so he curled up to sleep. And as he looked sleepily to the left and right, he saw two humans, ragged and dirty, approach him, eyes on the runes in his shaggy coat. And it was so that Tongvaidu brought language to the humans of Almira.
