Often revered by elders and diviners, Mama Iji was a wayang who came to godhood through her understanding of the basic components of arcane magic. A patron god of gamblers, Mama Iji is also invoked by gamblers in her aspect of the Harrow Mother, hoping to win at games of chance. Diviners often use Mama Iji's holy symbol, a set of jet or obsidian dice in their divinations in order to gain favor and extra knowledge. Mama Iji is sometimes worshiped as The Crone, the final aspect of the Triplicatum.
The First Follower of the Harrow Mother
In a fit of rage, the young man threw his cup to the ground. “I am sick of this family! You should not have crossed me!” Cloak in hand, the youth did then storm from the house, running into the wilderness of bayou.
In the darkness of the swamp, the young man trembled, lost and afraid. “I am alone!” He cried to the darkness, “Where is my family? I was wrong to run, but now am I to die? Who is a god to whom I can pledge my devotion? Who can I call upon to save my and return me safely to my parents hearth?”
And within the gathering shadows of the bayou, the rattle of dice was heard. “I will show you the future boy, should you pledge yourself to me. I am the Black Spirit, Mama Darkness, the Harrow Mother. Devote yourself to me and to your family, and the dice will show you home.”
Then from the darkness, a pair of midnight dice emerged. “Cast these dice to the ground, seal the pact, and you shall divine your way back home.”
