Cayto was a lowly peasant in the House of Herons when she accidentally insulted a noble and was killed in a duel. She rose as a deific Kyton and promptly killed the noble. Cayto has a strong tie to tradition and honoring verbal contracts or agreements. Even though she is an evil deity, Cayto is often invoked by good-aligned before a duel to acknowledge the terrible punishment for breaking such an oath.
The Duel Keeper’s First Oath
Cayto was still new to the House of Herons. She had wandered far and sought food and shelter from a local noble. Upon hearing her request, the gaudily dressed noble laughed and flipped her single copper piece.
When Cayto looked at the man with reproach for his miserliness the noble grew angry. He demanded a duel to appease his honor. “First touch wins,” he stated, “We shall begin at moonrise. Accept my challenge or I cut you down here and now."
In the dim light of the new moon, Cayto raised the sword she was given to defend herself. The noble raised his rapier with great skill and charged. The fight ended quickly but Cayto’s suffering did not. Still angered by the affront to his honor, the noble spent most of the night beating and torturing Cayto. When she did finally die, her spirit rose, wrapped in chains and imbued with spark of divinity. Cayto used her divine spark to slay the man where he stood.
