Hinemoa was once a beautiful woman. She was sure in her sexuality, moving with ease and delight from man to woman to man to woman, free and unfettered by concern. After a jealous man left her scarred and disfigured, she took up refuge in a monastery high in the Volorin Mountains. The healers worked their magics, but were unable to remove Hinemoa’s scars. Anger and sadness gave way to understanding and self-reflection. During her time in the monastery, Hinemoa and the chief healer fell in love. During their marriage ceremony, as they embraced, Hinemoa’s love kindled a second fire within her, the fire of divinity.
